Selecting a Room Air Purifier
![]() |
Many families are turning to room air purifier products to cleanse and purify the rooms of their home. One reason for this is a study that was conducted which showed that the air in most homes and offices is up to five times more contaminated than the air outside! People suffering from allergies often find relief by using air purifiers in their living spaces.
There are many different kinds of air purifiers that you can choose from. One of the most popular types is HEPA. HEPA is not a brand name, rather a designation that stands for High Efficency Particulate Air (The A may also stand for other words like Arrestance). In order for a filter or purifier to bear the HEPA acronym, it must capture particulate matter that is 0.3 microns in size. To get an idea of how tiny that is, imagine something that is 300 times smaller than the diameter of a piece of hair. 0.3 microns is 25 or more times smaller than anything the naked eye can see.
Another widely used type of purifier is the ionic variety. Ionic purifiers work by sending out negative ion streams, which attach to the contaminants in the air, causing them to float down where they can be dusted or vacuumed away. Many ionic purifiers available these days contain electromagnetic collector plates to capture the particles. A study done by the Swiss Meteorological Institute in the 1970's showed how negative ions in the air can benefit all living things -- people, animals and even plants!
The newest type of air purifiers available are those that use UV lights to kill bacteria, dander, dust and other contaminants. There are straight UV purifiers and other types of purifiers like HEPA and ionic which have UV germ killing features.
The type of room air purifier that you choose will depend on how sensitive you are to contaminants, how large or small your room is, and how much money you have to spend. Air purifiers in price to under $100 to over $500. When purchasing, make sure you're aware of the amount of space the purifier will clean. You will need more than one purifier if you have more than one floor, also you might want one in each bedroom in addition to your living room. Purchasing an air purifier is an investment in better health for you and the people in your home.
